The Beaumont Hotel, Hexham, Northumberland

Enjoy a car-free break in Hexham at The Beaumont Hotel

With a Rosette-awarded restaurant, four-star accommodation and the centre of Hexham on the doorstep, a stay at The Beaumont is about enjoying the hotel itself as well as exploring a beautiful Northumberland market town.

Its location also makes it particularly easy to visit without the car. Hexham is well connected by rail and bus from Newcastle, Carlisle and further afield, and once you arrive, the Abbey, shops, restaurants and town centre are all within easy reach on foot.

That makes The Beaumont a good choice for a night or two away, whether you are celebrating something special, meeting friends or simply fancying a change of scene without the hassle of driving.

Getting to Hexham Without the Car

For anyone travelling from Newcastle, Hexham is closer than you might think. Direct trains along the Tyne Valley Line typically take around 30–40 minutes, making it easy to leave the car at home and still feel as though you have had a proper break.

There are also regular bus services between Newcastle and Hexham, while the rail line continues west towards Carlisle, opening up The Beaumont to guests travelling from both directions.

Once you arrive in Hexham, there is very little need for onward transport. The Beaumont is in the heart of the town, so you can check in and spend much of your stay on foot.
That is part of the appeal, whether you are coming from nearby for a spontaneous night away or travelling further for a couple of days in Northumberland.

Make Dinner Part of the Break

Food is a big part of the experience at The Beaumont. The restaurant holds a Rosette Award for Culinary Excellence and serves an ever-changing seasonal menu, with the majority of ingredients sourced locally. The open kitchen, restaurant, lounge and bar form an informal, free-flowing space where guests can settle in for the evening rather than simply stopping for dinner before heading elsewhere.

That means dinner becomes part of the reason for booking the stay.

You might begin with one of The Beaumont’s signature aperitifs or cocktails, enjoy a leisurely dinner and stay for a nightcap afterwards. And because your room is only upstairs, nobody needs to be designated driver at the end of the evening.

For couples or friends looking for a night away, that combination of good food, drinks, four-star accommodation and no need to drive can make a short stay feel wonderfully special.

Explore Hexham on Foot

After breakfast the following morning, Hexham is right outside the door.

Hexham Abbey is on the opposite side of the street from The Beaumont, while the Market Place, independent shops and cafés are only a short stroll away.

You could spend some time exploring the Abbey, browse the shops or visit Hexham Old Gaol before taking a walk through the Sele Park.
There are also plenty of options if you fancy a quieter afternoon or evening. Queen’s Hall has a year-round programme of theatre, music, comedy and exhibitions, while the independent Forum Cinema sits in the Market Place and shows everything from new releases to live screenings and special events.

For a longer walk, head down towards Tyne Green and the River Tyne. It is an easy way to add some fresh air to the day without having to leave town, with riverside paths and open green space before you make your way back into the centre.

One of the nicest things about staying at The Beaumont is that you can do as much or as little as you like. Spend the day exploring, stop for coffee, return to the hotel for a drink or simply take your time over lunch without needing to plan the day around the car.

Explore a Little Further Without Driving

If you are staying for more than one night, Hexham is also a useful base for exploring more of the Tyne Valley by public transport.

Corbridge is just a short bus or train journey away and makes an easy half-day or day trip. You can wander through the village, browse the independent shops and cafés and then simply catch the train back to Hexham afterwards. The train service connects Hexham and Corbridge as part of the Newcastle–Hexham–Carlisle route.

You can also stay on the train for a day in Newcastle or head west towards Carlisle, which makes The Beaumont a good option for anyone who would like a short break without being tied to one place.

And during the main visitor season, Hexham is a useful starting point for exploring Hadrian’s Wall by bus, so even some of Northumberland’s best-known historic sites can be reached without having to drive.

That gives you the flexibility to enjoy Hexham itself one day and explore a little further the next.

Stay for One Night – or Make More of a short break

A stay at The Beaumont does not have to mean a traditional weekend away. A midweek night can work just as well and may be particularly appealing if you are looking for a quieter break, celebrating a birthday or anniversary, meeting friends or simply treating yourselves to a night somewhere different.

The Beaumont also offers short-break packages which combine accommodation with dining and breakfast.
Its current Celebration package, for example, includes a superior room, dinner allowance and full breakfast, while its Sunday Saver links an evening in the restaurant and bar with a reduced bed-and-breakfast room rate.

For guests wanting a little longer away, two or three nights gives you time to enjoy the hotel, explore Hexham and perhaps add a trip further along the Tyne Valley. For up to date special offers visit our dedicated Offers page

A Break Where The Beaumont Is Part of the Experience

One of the advantages of staying at The Beaumont is that the hotel is part of the break itself, not simply somewhere to sleep at the end of the day.

You can arrive, settle in, enjoy a leisurely dinner, stay for a drink afterwards and wake up with Hexham ready to explore just outside the door.

Whether you are coming from nearby or travelling from further afield, it is an easy way to enjoy a night or two away without the usual driving, parking and planning – and with good food, comfortable accommodation and plenty to enjoy all close at hand.
