Hexham November Events: Fireworks, Christmas Lights and Shopping Local
November is the month Hexham starts to sparkle. It begins with fireworks over the Sele, ends with the Christmas lights going on across town, and in between there are gift fairs, markets and plenty of chances to get ahead with your Christmas shopping.
Here are the dates worth putting in the diary, whether you live in the Tyne Valley or you are planning a winter visit.
Fireworks Night on the Sele: Saturday 7th November
Hexham’s Fireworks Night takes place in Sele Park at 7pm on Saturday 7th November. It is organised by Hexham Town Council with the support of local groups including Hexham Rotary Club and Tynedale Lions, and it is free to attend.
Volunteers will be collecting donations on the night. Every contribution helps to fund next year’s display and supports local charities and community projects, so it is well worth bringing some change.
The Sele is directly opposite The Beaumont, so if you are joining us for dinner that evening, you won’t have far to go.
Remembrance Sunday: 8 November
The following day is Remembrance Sunday, when the town comes together to mark the occasion. A parade takes place through the town centre from the Market Place, down Beaumont Street towards the War Memorial which is just through the entrance to the Sele Park. Details of the service and parade are published by Hexham Town Council.
Start Your Christmas Shopping Early
There are several good opportunities to find gifts in and around Hexham this month.
At the start of November – Sunday 1st, there is a Local Makers Market at Tynedale Function Suite at Hexham Mart, from 10.00am – 3pm. The following week is Tynedale Gift Fair, again at The Mart is at the on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 November. One week later, the largest local fair – Brocksbushes Christmas Fayre runs over 4 days from Thursday 12th to Sunday 15th November at the farm shop just outside Corbridge, with stalls from artisans, crafters and food producers.
Back in town, Hexham Farmers’ Market is in the Market Place on Saturday 14th and Saturday 28th November (9am to 1.30pm over the winter). It is a great place to pick up chutneys, cheeses, baking and other edible gifts made within 50 miles of Hexham.
Support our Local Shops
Hexham is a market town with a long history of trading, and still has a strong mix of independent shops, cafés and makers. Buying gifts from them keeps money in the local economy and helps keep the town centre lively all year round, not just at Christmas.
Hexham Town Council keeps a list of independent local businesses, which is a useful starting point if you are looking for something a little different.
The Christmas Lights Switch-On: Friday 20 November
Hexham Town Council has set Friday 20th November as the date for this year’s Christmas lights switch-on, with times to be confirmed nearer the day.
In recent years, the evening has begun at the bandstand in the Sele with local school choirs and the arrival of Father Christmas, followed by a parade to the Abbey Flags, where the town’s tree, donated each year by Egger, is lit up. Many shops stay open late afterwards, so it is a good night to combine with some Christmas shopping.
From then on, the lights in the park make a lovely backdrop to an evening in our restaurant and bar.
Dinner and Drinks After the Lights
After a cold evening in the park, there is nothing better than a warm table and a good meal. Our restaurant holds an AA Rosette for culinary excellence, and dinner is served daily from 5pm until 8.30pm, including aged steaks and locally caught fish from our charcoal-fired Josper oven.
The bar is open until 10.30pm every day, with seasonal cocktails, a carefully chosen wine list and local beers.
Busy evenings such as fireworks night and the lights switch-on fill up quickly, so we recommend booking ahead. Tables for up to six can be reserved through our Restaurant & Dining page. For larger groups, including Christmas get-togethers with friends or colleagues, please call reception.
Stay a Little Longer
Our Explore Northumberland offer runs from 1 November until 30 April: stay three nights and pay for two. It is a relaxed way to see Hexham in its winter finery, with time to explore Hadrian’s Wall, the Tyne Valley and the Northumberland coast too.
