Northumberland Spring Breaks: Culture, Comfort, and the Hexham Book Festival

Spring in Northumberland is a season of awakening. As the days lengthen and the vibrant greenery of the Tyne Valley returns, Hexham transforms. For those seeking a refined Northumberland spring break, our historic market town offers the perfect intersection of wild landscapes and sophisticated culture.

At The Beaumont, the change in season is felt immediately. From our windows, the views across The Sele brighten as the park blooms, and the gentle hum of the town returns to its outdoor café terraces. It is a time of quiet energy—ideal for those who wish to experience Hexham’s charm before the height of the summer season.

This spring, the town’s cultural heartbeat quickened as we welcomes the return of the Hexham Book Festival 2026.

The Literary Heart of the Northeast

The festival took place this year from the 24th April to 3rd May 2026, and is one of the region’s most anticipated events. It brings a curated selection of world-class authors, journalists, and thinkers to the heart of our town. The roster included: Alexander McCall Smith, Val McDermid, Lee Child, Andrey Kurkov and Sarah Hall. Historians Tracy Borman and Antonia Senior; US Poet Jane Hirshfield; and politicians Nicola Sturgeon, Penny Mordaunt and Chris Mullin.

Staying at The Beaumont places you in the “front row” of the festivities. One of our greatest luxuries is our location:

  • A Stroll Away: The Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, the festival’s primary hub, is just a three-minute walk from our front door.
  • Ditch the Car: Forget the stress of parking or transport. Spend your morning at a headline talk, wander back to the hotel for a seasonal lunch, and head back out for an evening event at your own pace.
  • Post-Talk Debates: Our wood-panelled bar is the perfect sanctuary to discuss a new biography or novel over a glass of fine wine or a local Northumberland ale.

A Boutique Sanctuary for Spring Escapes

The Beaumont is more than just a place to sleep; it is a base for discovery. While the festival provides intellectual stimulation, the surrounding landscape offers physical restoration. We are very lucky to have some amazing historical sites within a small radius of the hotel.

  • Heritage on Your Doorstep: Wake up to views of the 12th-century Hexham Abbey before setting off to explore the nearby Roman remains of Hadrian’s Wall.
  • Slow Living: Spring is the perfect time for the “slow travel” experience. Explore the independent bookshops and galleries of Hexham, or take a short drive to the charming village of Corbridge for boutique shopping.
  • Seasonal Dining: Our kitchen celebrates the arrival of spring with menus featuring the best of Northumberland’s larder—think succulent local lamb, heritage spring vegetables, and fresh coastal seafood.

What’s more, Hexham Book Festival attendee’s can receive 10% off their dinner bill upon presentation of their ticket, even more reason to dine with us after watching a talk from your favourite author!

Why Choose Hexham This Season?

While Northumberland is a year-round destination, a spring stay offers a unique sense of intimacy. The popular walking routes are quieter, the historic streets feel vibrant yet spacious, and the light—especially during the “golden hour” over the Abbey—is a photographer’s dream.

The Hexham Book Festival adds a layer of intellectual vibrancy to this natural beauty. For our guests, it becomes a holistic escape: a blend of literature, countryside, and the effortless comfort of a boutique hotel that feels like home.
