Hexham Weekend Getaway at the Beaumont Hotel

The Perfect Hexham Weekend Getaway - 3 day Itinerary Ideas

Often featured among the UK’s happiest places to live, Hexham makes the perfect setting for a weekend getaway.  There’s an easy rhythm to life here — a historic market town surrounded by open countryside, where independent shops, green spaces and centuries of history sit comfortably side by side.

Set in the heart of this much-loved Northumberland town, our boutique Victorian townhouse hotel provides an ideal base for a relaxed Hexham weekend getaway. With views across The Sele Park and Hexham Abbey just moments away, it’s easy to understand why so many visitors return time and again.

After years of welcoming guests and exploring Hexham as locals ourselves — we’ve put together a relaxed 2–3 day itinerary that reflects how many of our visitors choose to spend their time here. With historic landmarks, gentle countryside walks, seasonal food and plenty of opportunities to slow down and unwind, the Beaumont Hotel Hexham offers an ideal base for a weekend escape, whether you’re visiting for a romantic break, a solo reset, or a few days away with friends.

Day One: Arrival & Market Town Exploration

Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your stay at The Beaumont. Each of our rooms is individually designed, with thoughtful touches including king-size beds dressed in Egyptian cotton, Aromatherapy Associates toiletries and in many cases, peaceful views across the park.

Before heading out, take a moment to relax in our open-plan lounge with a drink from the bar. On warmer days, our bi-folding doors open with views onto The Sele, creating a relaxed café-style atmosphere; in cooler months, it’s just as inviting to watch the park lights twinkle from indoors.

When you’re ready, step outside for a gentle wander through The Sele park, directly opposite the hotel. With tree-lined paths, flowerbeds and benches overlooking Hexham Abbey, it’s the perfect way to ease into your stay.

From here, it’s just a few minutes walk into Hexham’s historic centre. Spend the afternoon exploring cobbled streets, independent shops and traditional buildings. On certain days of the month (Tuesday and some Saturdays), Hexham’s long-established market is well worth a browse, offering local produce, crafts, cheeses and baked treats.

Evening: Dinner & Unwinding

Return to the hotel for a relaxed dinner in our restaurant. Our menu centres on seasonal plates made with Northumberland produce, as well as our charcoal-powered Josper oven perfect for aged steaks and grilled fish. Pair your meal with a glass from our carefully curated wine list and watch the evening light fade over the park — a favourite way for guests to end their first day.

Day Two: History, Nature & Northumberland Landscapes

Begin the day with our Northumberland breakfast, ranging from a classic full English to smoked trout, smashed avocado, French toast or Florentine eggs, served with views towards Hexham Abbey and the Sele Park.

Morning: Hexham Abbey
A visit to Hexham Abbey is an essential part of any stay and couldn’t be closer. Explore its striking architecture, ancient crypt and peaceful interior. Earlier visits tend to be quieter, allowing time to appreciate the atmosphere at your own pace.

Afternoon: Hadrian’s Wall or Local Walks
In the afternoon, venture slightly further afield to Hadrian’s Wall, one of Britain’s most remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Locations such as Housesteads Roman Fort are around 20–30 minutes away by car or bus, offering well-marked trails and sweeping countryside views. It’s an ideal blend of history and fresh air, with tearooms nearby for a warming stop.

If you’d rather stay closer to town, enjoy riverside walks along the River Tyne or spend longer exploring the paths around The Sele and nearby woodland. Our team is always happy to recommend routes suited to the weather and your energy levels.

Evening: A Relaxed Final Night
Return to the comfort of the hotel for your final evening. Enjoy another visit to our open kitchen, or settle in with a nightcap by the fire. In summer, guests often linger outdoors; in winter, the cosy atmosphere indoors is just as appealing.

Day Three: Slow Mornings & Farewell Views

If you’re extending your stay, enjoy a slower start to the day. Browse Hexham’s antique shops, or visit the Old Gaol Museum to learn more about the area’s Border Reiver history.

Alternatively, many guests choose to make the most of the hotel itself — reading in the lounge, enjoying a leisurely brunch or taking one last stroll through the park.

Departure tip: A final walk across The Sele before heading home is a lovely way to end your stay, and the abbey provides a fitting backdrop for a last photograph.

A Hexham Weekend Getaway to Remember

This kind of weekend is what Hexham does best — unhurried days, time outdoors, good food and space to breathe. The Beaumont Hotel’s location is perfect for visiting attractions as well as exploring the natural rhythm of the town.

Perhaps that’s why Hexham so often appears in conversations about quality of life. A few days here is usually enough to understand the appeal — and for many guests, it marks the beginning of return visits.
